Sustainable
water in Kenya

Rapid growth with transformative impact

Kenya Overview

Kenya faces significant challenges in providing safe drinking water, currently 15 million people don’t have regular access. Despite major water sources like Lake Victoria and the Tana River, many rural communities rely on distant or unreliable supply points. Prolonged dry seasons and uneven rainfall make scarcity a daily struggle, particularly in arid regions where securing water is essential for both survival and livelihoods.

eWATER Kenya is rapidly scaling to respond to this critical need. Driven by a high-performing local team, we’ve built systems in 16 villages for more than 50,000 people in Laikipia, Tharaka Nithi and Kirinyaga Counties in our first year. We have new systems in the pipeline reaching 100,000 more people in the next 12 months.

A team of exceptional scoping experts, engineers, community engagement staff and technicians have been recruited in Kenya over the last 2 years to make the eWATER Kenya programme a global leader in delivering new sustainable water systems efficiently and rapidly.

Kenya Technology Partnerships

In Kenya, we work closely with a group of trusted technology partners to ensure our systems are reliable, efficient, and built to last.

We collaborate with Gearbox Europlacer, a Nairobi-based electronic manufacturing company. Working closely with eWATERservices’ in-house IT and technology team, Gearbox supports the local design and manufacture of key components of the latest eWATERtap, including a lower-cost, more robust communications board, improved flow-meter monitoring, and a range of IoT-connected sensors for remote system monitoring.

We partner with TEM, to carry out detailed and efficient hydrogeological surveys that maximise the number of successful boreholes drilled and reduce the risk of failed installations.

We work with Grundfos for pumping solutions because of their proven reliability and durability, helping ensure our systems are built to operate consistently over the long term.

Working with a Kenyan companies and high quality global brands combines local expertise, easier customs and importing of equipment, more localised control of the value chain and supports eWATER’s mission of evolving to be the leading African rural water company

Freesia’s Story

Freesia, a vibrant fruit and vegetable seller in Kiriko, Kenya, embodies the transformative power of eWATER’s smart technology. Just 24 hours after registering her eWATER tag, she’d already collected 100 litres of clean water. The Smart Tap represents more than infrastructure – it’s a gateway to economic opportunity.

Freesia’s access to reliable, affordable water means:

Clean water is just steps away from her market stall.

Her produce is safer to buy and eat; she can wash vegetables easily and cleanly, without closing her business.

Closer access to water allows her to keep her daughter with her, simplifying her child care.

She’s got the potential to expand her business and produce hot soups.

Freesia’s story showcases the power of access to water. She represents thousands of entrepreneurs across Kenya whose economic potential is transformed by the availability of safe, reliable water.

Transforming children’s lives:

After just a few months of access to eWATER’s smart taps, mothers begin to notice their children’s health improving.

When eWATER taps are nearby, parents no longer face the frightening option of having to give their young ones contaminated water from rivers or lakes. Instead they have a clean and accessible alternative for drinking, bathing and household use.
